How to Crochet a Mini Chicken – Free Pattern

Mini Crochet Chicken

This super cute Mini Chicken is easy to crochet for yourself, gifts, and market prep! They only use a tiny amount of yarn so you can make them using scrap yarn or make lots and lots of them from a whole skein of yarn. In the tutorial linked below you can watch this pattern for free or keep scrolling for a written out basic version of the pattern.

Materials:

You will need plush yarn or blanket yarn, in two colors. The body color (whatever you like) and red for the chicken comb. A yarn needle for weaving in ends, small amount of stuffing, plastic eyes (or more yarn for embroidering the eyes) and scissors.

To Begin BODY:

Magic Ring,

Rnd 1. sc 8 into MR

Rnd 2. inc into each st around (16sts)

Rnd 3 -6. sc into each st around – 4 rounds- (16sts) Do not cut yarn.

Chicken Head:

Counting forward from hook skip 10 sts, then sc dec the 11th and 12th sts, then dec 2 more times. Cut a long tail (about 15″) and pull this long tail through the last loop on your hook. Weave around last hole at the top of the head and pull closed. Weave the tail down, to body opening.

Stuff the Chicken:

For this I like to add stuffing like a bowl, this way the sides of your work is smooth and won’t have lumps from the stuffing. Add a bit more stuffing into the center of the chicken. Using the remains of the long tail, sew the body of the chicken closed. Do not cut the yarn, YET.

Tail Feathers:

To make the little tail feathers, I make a loop with the remaining yarn tail, using my finger to hold open the loop and then making a knot at the bottom of the loop. I like to make 3 tail feathers. You can see how I do this better by watching my tutorial. Linked HERE.
